The Valmiera Drama Theatre's production of Jane Eyre, which premiered on December 15, 2016, is director Reinis Suhanovs' interpretation of Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel. This adaptation distances itself from the traditional "women's novel" lens, instead highlighting universal human emotions and gothic elements. The performance follows the story of the independent governess Jane Eyre, offering a psychological exploration of emotional depth and identity.
The scenography was designed by artist and scenographer Evija Pintāne, and brought to life in collaboration with a team of craftsmen at the company “Dekorāciju darbnīca.” The sculptural elements and forms—based on the scale model provided—were crafted by myself, who served as the sculptor for the production.
The show received mixed reviews: audiences rated it a 6.5 out of 10, and critics were divided. While Suhanovs’ ambition to present a fresh take on the story was recognized, some felt the result didn’t fully land.
